January | Garnet
Garnet is the birthstone of January. Commonly associated with the colour red, it can actually occur in a variety of colours including oranges, and pinkish reds, yellows, blues, and greens.
The name “Garnet” comes from the Latin word “Garanatus,”which means “seedlike,” in reference to the seeds of a pomegranate fruit.
It is a traditional gift for a second wedding anniversary.
Garnet can be found on every continent, typically near the Earth's surface. It has been used as a gemstone for over 5000 years and has been a popular gem throughout history. Some of the oldest garnets have been found in Egyptian tombs.
During the Middle Ages, garnet was used as a remedy for the plague and other diseases. Legends and folklore place garnet among the most ancient of talismans.
